HEAVILY UNDER
CONSTRUCTION
Sorry but this page has only some fragments of the old rippers page. As
soon as I can I will rewrite the whole page.
Untill then here is a sort help, in case your ripper does not work.
What to do:
- If you use any windows ripper and it sais that there is a problem with the CD ROM, then
you have problem with the ASPI interface. A utility that checks that is here (http://www.adaptec.com/support/files/upgrades.html)
and called aspichk.exe. Don't download the latest ASPI update from udapteck, because it is
an upgrade and not stand alone utility. If it reports bad ASPI instalation, go to ASPI drivers page
for instructions.
- If you fail to rip with the v4.54 of ASPI drivers, then you need an MSCDEX Ripper.
Download Audiograbber or/and CDDA1.7. Chose MSCDEX mode for AG and the /m option for
CDDA1.7. If you fail again to rip, it is very posible to have a "bad" version of
scsihlp.vxd driver (very common in OSR2). A right version of
this driver is here.
Download it and install it. Then rerun the programs in MSCDEX mode. Most drives will be
able to rip now.
- If you still have a problem, then the only thing you can do is to run DOS rippers in MS
DOS mode (not dos box) and see the resaults.
That's for now. More in the future.
Fragments of the old page. If you are desperate read them.

Start
with an ASPI ripper
The best two programs to start are "Audiograbber" or "WinDac".
If you face some problems, like ASPI error from Audiograbber, or like "Your CD can't
be ripped" from WinDac, you should try to check your ASPI interface. Adaptec has a
great utility at the page http://www.adaptec.com/support/files/upgrades.html
, called aspichk.exe, that checks if your drivers are correctly installed. You should have version 4.54 or higher at least for WinDac. You
can find instructions about ASPI drivers and you can download them, from my ASPI drivers page. |

 |
If you
fail to rip in ASPI mode ...
... although you have the correct version of
ASPI drivers, then you should try the MSCDEX mode.
The best program for this mode is "Audiograbber".
From the general settings, chose MSCDEX.
If there is again a problem with a driver you may need to update your "Scsi1hlp.vxd"
driver. An updated version can be found here,
or read Audiograbber's help file for more information. After installing this driver, In
most of the cases, you will be able to rip your CD ROM drive through MSCDEX mode. |

If none
of the windows rippers work, try to use a DOS one.
These programs are bypassing windows drivers and will
work with most system configurations. The best of them is CDDA1.7
and it is distributed in a file called "da2wav.zip". The latest version is
available to download from this page. The documentation of the program is one of the best
available and will help you understand many things about ripping CDs. Remember to use the /o option that
bypasses the copy protection bit of the commercial CDs. If you are using IDE drive and
Win95 and you face any problems, use the /m option that uses the MSCDEX only mode
of the program. If it works forget DOS and download CDDAfe (Front Ends page). With CDDA1.7 MP3 Compressor or L3Enc
and CDDAfe you cad make mp3s very very easy. |
Reasons that the ripper is not
working.
 |
CD ROM drivers are not
co-operating with the ripper.
The most usual problem. There are many
slightly different version of some windows drivers (SCSII, ASPI etc). A ripper works only
with some certain version of them. In that case you can be helped by the help files of the
program or from the author's web page. |
 |
The specific ripper is not working
with your CD ROM
is another usual problem. To solve it, first
off all, choose a ripper that is compatible with the type of your CD ROM drive (IDE or
SCSII). In most of the case this is enough. However, you might be unlucky, and your CD ROM
is co-operating only with some rippers. In this case, the best you can do is to try the
programs one by one until you find which is for you. A list of some CD ROM drives and
their compatible rippers is available at mp3.com. However, this isn't a formal list and may put you into trouble.
One of my CD ROM's (ACER CD-916E) wasn't working with the compatible rippers shown in that
list and worked just fine with some that were shown in the list as incompatible. So the best way to find which ripper is for you, is to
try them by yourself. |
 |
Your CD ROM drive can't be ripped
This is rare, but possible. There are some
models that no ripper can rip them.
IMPORTANT: Before you jump to this conclusion, you must try the DOS only rippers first. DOS rippers are working only in MS DOS mode (not in a window under Win 95)
and the are bypassing the Windows drivers. Since in most of the cases the problems are
caused by drivers, DOS rippers generally are co-operating with most of the CD ROM models
that windows rippers fail. |
