A little while ago, both rippers and encoders, were command
line utilities, a bit difficult to use. Apart from that, you need two steps to make mp3s,
and this is a little boring. These two problems are what Front Ends trying to solve.
They are simple graphical interfaces, that let you control
your ripper or your encoder from a single control panel. The best of them allow you to rip
and encode with one press of a button.
Nowadays, almost all the windows rippers are acting like
front ends to the most popular encoders, like l3enc or CODEC. So the usage of the Front
Ends is limited to people who need to use a command line ripper, because they are facing
problems with the windows' ones.
On the other hand Front Ends are now expanding their
capabilities and offer some more services, like combining ripper, encoder and player
control end functions with ID3 tag editing and playlist Editor capabilities. Such a
program is the StripIt suit.

Excellent interface for CDDA1.7 or CDDA32 as ripper and
for L3Enc or MP3 Compressor as encoder. It is a vary efficient solution for people who are
using CDDA1.7, even if you need to rip only in MS DOS mode. The program is making simple
batch files that can be executed any time you want. Complete graphical control over all
the options of the supported rippers and encoders. It has also very detailed help
documents in HTML format, explaining not only the interface but also the usage of CDDA. |

Does not support the new CODEC, which is supported by most
of Windows rippers. |

This program tries to cover all your needs to make and
play mp3s. It is a ripper, encoder, and player front end. It also features an ID3 tag
editor and playlist editor, combined in a very good interface. It's main screen is like
the windows explorer, which lists all the folders with mp3s on the left side and all mp3
files on the right side. From this screen you can play, edit ID3 tags, or make a playlist
very easy. |

I don't like the wizard style ripper interface and the
cool but not so clear fonts. It also lucks support of CODEC, which is a standards
among the other rippers. |
